Alistair Krebs, a Tickton resident, is ashamed of himself after breaking into a village store where he was familiar with and liked the proprietor
The DNA from thick gloves left by a burglar, who broke into the village’s post office through the roof after ripping tiles off and tearing them up was used to identify him.
Alistair Krebs, the ruthless raider, knew personally the owner of the Post Office and used this knowledge to deliberately target the building, leaving a damage trail that cost £1,500 to fix, Hull Crown Court was told. Krebs, 52 of Main Street in Tickton near Beverley admitted to burglarizing the village’s post office.
Krebs admitted to a second attempted burglary, this time at an address linked with Beverley Minster. He had originally been scheduled to go on trial, but changed his plea.
Ben Hammersley from the prosecution said that on June 15, last year at around 10pm, the owner of Tickton Post Office and Shop had locked up. However, he received a call after midnight, June 16, from an alarm firm, stating that there was a break in. The tiles on the roof had been torn off and the intruder made an opening to gain access to the attic. He then lifted a hatch to enter the storeroom.
Damages were estimated to be around 1,500 PS. Krebs took packets of cigarettes, and alcohol bottles. The gloves found nearby matched Krebs’ DNA. The CCTV footage was recorded from the inside of the building.
The Cloisters in Outer Trinities Beverley was the site of the attempted break-in. It belonged to Beverley Minster Parochial Church Council. The building was empty at the time as it was being renovated.
The man living next door was shocked to discover that the window of his neighbor had been broken on the night of 13 September last year. The man contacted the office of his church to inform them. He went to the church office and told them.
Hammersley said that there was “no evidence of a break-in and no items were taken.” Blood traces linked Krebs to the burglary.
Krebs was arrested, and during an interview last Christmas Eve, he denied the accusations and couldn’t explain the DNA found on the gloves and blood. His convictions date back to the 80s and 90s. He was convicted for crimes such as violence and criminal damages. In 2016, he was convicted of assault.
Rachel Scott said Krebs “bury his head in sand”, about his issues, after he had taken class A drugs. He felt ashamed for robbing the post office.
“He really liked the owner of the shop in the village that he broke into,” Miss Scott said. It was possible that he felt shame about his actions, which is why he first denied it before pleading guilt.
“He waited so long to admit it,” Miss Scott said. He accepted the responsibility of his actions. He is now five or six weeks without alcohol and has not taken any drugs since last September. “He is doing the best he can.”
Krebs is a manager of a large building, and he’s currently off, though he hopes to return soon.
The judge John Thackray KC stated that the burglary of the Post Office was a well-planned crime. Judge Thackray said that he had been prepared. It was June, but he wore thick gloves.
Someone who has worked hard for a week would be very frustrated to find out that their workplace was “rassacked” by someone else. Judge Thackray stated that he did not “accept for a minute” Krebs’ original claim that he couldn’t remember the incident at the post office.
He said, “You knew the location and owner before you targeted this property.” You should be ashamed.
Krebs received a suspended nine-month prison term, along with 100 unpaid hours of work and 20 rehabilitation days. The judge ordered him to pay PS 1,500 as compensation for damage caused at the Post Office. Judge Thackray said, “Consider yourselves very lucky.”
