The Frank Erwin Center, at the intersection of I-35 Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Dallas since 1977 is a landmark. It’s now been one year, eight months and counting since the last event it held. But its landmark status is about to expire.

The “Drum”, once the site of Texas Longhorns basketball games, concerts, and tours, is now being demolished to make way for new hospital facilities. SpawGlass is the UT construction contractor working on this project. Instead of destroying the entire arena in a spectacular way, they are tearing it apart.

Dan Cook, Executive Director of Planning, Design and Construction at UT Austin, said: “If you demolish the building by blowing it up, and you don’t take any preventative measures, you risk damaging other buildings.” You could endanger the lives of people.

An implosion would pose a danger to the workers at the site as well as those who work in the Dell Medical Center, located across the street.

Cook explained that they had installed seismic sensors in several locations in order to monitor any activity in case something dropped. They wanted to ensure the equipment at the hospital was not affected.

Asbest in the Arena has been reduced to a large extent. Roof has mostly been removed. The concrete side panels that are signature to the building will be taken off one at a time and removed on trucks.

Cook explained that some asbestos-containing materials must be handled as hazardous material.

The remaining metal will then resemble more of a square rather than a drum. The metal beams are cut into pieces and then hauled away to be recycled. UT expects that most of the materials used in construction will be reused.

Cook stated that “we estimate between 70 and 80%” of the structure will be reused.

Concrete chunks will be crushed and broken up to use for other projects. Beams, pipes, and rebar all can be reused.

Cook explained that “the first thing you hear when someone mentions the Erwin Center’s demolition is an anecdote, or a story of an event they witnessed there or an experience they had,” Cook stated.

Dell Medical School will include the new building. Anderson expansion into Austin. Dell as well as M.D. Anderson is part of the University of Texas System.

Erwin Center will be demolished in full by the end of October. Cook said that plans are in their early stages, and will not be finalized before the Erwin Center is gone.
