After the fire that broke out at the Quadrant Market in the Otoka Settlement, Sarajevo has set aside 100,000 BAM for assistance.
The Public Relations Department of Sarajevo stated that “thanks to the Collegium of City Council’s support, the City of Sarajevo has allocated 100,000 BAM as help for the Quadrant Market on Otoka fire.”
Fire that started on the 5th of November at a market in Otoka, a neighborhood near Sarajevo caused massive material damage. The BHRT team discovered ashes and grayness in the surrounding buildings this morning.
Only today can the extent of damage caused by the fire that was put out yesterday with the help of more than fifty firefighters and 17 vehicles be clearly seen.
Jasminterovic, Director of KJKP Sarajevo Market said the fire had engulfed all of “Kvadrant”, the area open to the public. After the fire has been repaired, it is important that people who depend on the market for their income are helped.
He said that there were 185 boxes on the market with 55 customers.
The value of each type of item depends on which user has it. There was a lot of damage. Terovic stated that according to our first estimate, 80 percent of the building was destroyed and there were millions in damages.
He stressed that the investigation is still ongoing.
Terovic said, “We’re currently working on this and I hope it will be finished soon. They can then take over my part and begin clearing the market. Let’s also see what can be done with the founder and the other levels of government to help.”
He said that the first priority was to give people the opportunity to return to their jobs, but also stressed the fact that it would not be enough to just provide them with space. They will need financial assistance as well.
The goods have been burned and they must buy them again. Terovic said that they would ask the institutions to help them, including the Government of Canton Sarajevo and the City of Sarajevo.
Benjamina Karic visited the locality of this village yesterday. She said that Sarajevo City Council would provide financial aid to anyone whose building on the marketplace has burned.
This is a tragedy for our city, as more than fifty buildings on an island burned, and were the sole source of income to the families who gathered there. The brave firefighters, who put out the fire and made every effort to minimize the damage are to be commended. We can call this a tragic and sad day for Sarajevo. It’s a blessing that no one has been injured and everyone is still alive. It is truly a tragedy. All colleagues at all levels of the government are urged to find ways to assist people. Karic said that he would propose the City Council of Sarajevo allocate money to families to repair the damages to their businesses.
