Sydney was pounded by powerful winds overnight, which caused a number of trees to fall and thousands of homes to lose power.
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Rowan Smith explained that the wind gusts were caused by a concentrated westerly.
He said that the worst, or most damaging, damage is done. We expect a few breezy winds, but nothing too serious.
Winds up to 98 kph were measured at Camden, and gusts as high as 104 km/h were registered at Badgerys Creek.
Peter Payne, spokesman for Endeavour Energy, said that 19,000 households and businesses had no power just before 7am. At 1pm more than 2,600 people were still without electricity.
He said that if you start at Oakdale, and then draw a straight line to Baulkham Hills or Castle Hill there would be damage to the powerlines.
The wind brought down the powerlines, and the damage to the network was severe. Mr Payne warned that residents would have to wait a while for power.
Our crews need to manually control each powerline because we are under a total fire ban.
We do it because we take extra safety measures.
New South Wales State Emergency Service said that it received 162 requests for assistance since 3am. Trees were blown into roads, carports fell onto fences, and a roof had been completely blown off.
Andrew Edmonds, NSW SES, said that crews were called in to Camden, Campbelltown Liverpool, and Penrith.
He said that any loose objects in yards or houses of people can become projectiles.
Sydney Airport may experience flight cancellations and delays due to the winds later today.
Airservices Australia (the national organisation for air safety) said that they will likely recommend the implementation of single runway operations today, both in arrivals and departures.
The airline has advised passengers to notify them immediately if there are any disruptions in their flights.
Today, the city has a total ban on fire and is in a state of extreme danger.
Multiple grassfires are being fought by firefighters on the outer suburbs of Sydney, in west and south-west.
NSW Rural Fire Service reported that a grassfire near Wallacia south of Penrith burned overnight but did not cause structural damage.
A total fire ban is in effect for more than 80 percent of NSW on Tuesday due to the dry, windy and cold weather forecast.
