A collapsed event centre near Ijero-Ekiti – the local government area headquarters in Ekiti State – left no fewer than 6 people dead.
The Nation reported that this incident occurred at around 4:15 pm on Saturday.
While the 250 people inside were attending a memorial ceremony at the venue, its walls and roof began to recede. They suffered various degrees of injuries.
Fire Services arrived on scene quickly and saved the lives of those who were trapped in the rubble.
As well as the wreckage of the car, spilled meals and drinks served for guests littered the auditorium, along with broken glasses, male caps and female headgears.
A witness described what happened as: “An exercise was in progress for the reception of a burial when a large crack was noticed on the walls. A sudden collapse of the roof, and Plaster of Paris fell down on people inside the auditorium.
It was a massive stampede. The stampede caused many injuries, while other occupants suffered grave bodily injury. I was with Fire Service and the Local Government Chairman to save people from the rubbles.
The injured persons were rushed to hospital as soon as possible.
Biodun Ayebanji is the Ekiti Governor who expressed sadness and sorrow over this tragic building collapse.
Oyebanji’s deputy Chief Monisade Afuye accompanied him to the Ijero General Hospital on Sunday, where several victims had been treated.
Oyebanji has directed the various government departments to oversee and certify all such public buildings at each stage in order to prevent any unnecessary deaths.
The Governor warned the situation could not happen again, and that government agencies should ensure that building standards are met.
Oyebanji confirmed that his Government will devise strategies in order for local governments to be able to use Emergency Management Equipment and respond to alarming situations.
