NEW BRIGHTON – On September 30, New Brighton is hosting its Free Underground Railroad Walking Tour.

This year’s biennial celebration will now span two days. On Sept. 29, two historians will present a kick-off speaker event at the Merrick Art Gallery, 1100 Fifth Ave. Steven Cole will play Frederick Douglass in a performance at 8 pm. Tickets for the two events cost $10 each and are available at: www.nbhistory.org. A light meal will be provided.

On Sept. 30, New Brighton Historical Society welcomes history buffs to the Free Underground Railroad Walking Tour. The tour begins at 9am at 1612 Third Ave. (currently the site of J&J Spratt). To participate, walkers will need to sign up in advance for their preferred time. All tours depart at 2pm.

NBHS staff and costumed volunteer will inform you about these tours that leave at 15 minute intervals. You’ll visit stops along the Underground Railroad – a network consisting of safe houses, secret routes and routes used by runaway slaves on their way to freedom.

The NBHS reminds all tour participants that there is a steep slope and uneven walkways in the tour.

On site, historical information, displays and food will be for sale. WBVP Radio’s broadcast will be live.

It includes a visit to the Merrick Art Gallery. An underground tunnel, thought to be part the Underground Railroad, was discovered there this spring. In the middle of an excavation project for the Merrick’s back yard, an entry to a hidden tunnel was discovered. Exploration revealed that it spanned completely beneath the museum.

Visit the museum during opening hours to see where the exposed tunnel entrance is.

Michelle Long is the director of Merrick. She said: “We bought a canopy to cover the entry and have started installing it.” “The entrance will be covered by the gazebo. Now comes the repair of bricks. It is visible from above. It is the last stop for Underground tours. Visitors can look at the entrance of the tunnel. However, it has not been made ready to allow the public inside yet.

Walking tour of eight historic buildings or homes that are either connected to the Underground Railroad (or were part thereof) or have been linked with famous abolitionists.

Mike Spratt, NBHS’s president, said “school history is primarily taught at a global level.” We are educated about historical people and events. Both the positive and negative aspects of these events and figures is taught. But local history or local participation in large-scale events rarely gets covered. The tour began because of a young student who asked the question “How was New Brighton involved in the Underground Railroad?” No one knew the answer.

New Brighton’s tour explores how people in the area played a role in events that took place around them.

Spratt added that “people who come on this tour can walk away from it with a much better understanding of New Brighton and its small part in helping people to escape the horrors slavery.”

The first night of the event is focused on the surrounding area. Attendees can learn from those who made a living in Pittsburgh, after finding their freedom. Spratt also said that attendees will learn more about Frederick Douglass who is a former slav and an abolitionist.
