A hospital in Ireland that was inundated by torrential rainfall last summer is now facing an estimated repair bill of EUR1,000,000.
In June last year, heavy rainfall in Tralee led to widespread flooding on the campus of University Hospital Kerry.
Rainfall on the 17th of June was the most intense in the history of this city, with a total rainfall exceeding 1 mm per hour. This deluge caused damage to some buildings whose drainage and roof systems were not able to cope.
Dunnes Stores in Tralee, for example, suffered damage to the roof.
UHK confirms that flood damage repair costs currently stand at EUR 870,000.
The total cost of repairs, upgrades to equipment and other repair works could be as high as EUR1million.
UHK sent Radio Kerry figures that showed that the majority of this money was spent on replacing specialist cardiology equipment damaged in the flooding.
Water entering the unit severely damaged the equipment and it could not be fixed.
The hospital’s kitchen, mechanical room, conference rooms, and the palliative centre were some of the most severely affected areas.
UHK has stated that hospital insurance will cover the structural repair.
The HSE has also stated that it will source the replacement specialist equipment through its national buying schemes.
Equipment used at the hospital will be similar to that found in HSE hospitals throughout the country.
Kerry TD Michael Healy Rae, however, said that it was an “astronomical amount”.
He warned: “At first, it seems to be a crazy amount that has just come out of the clouds which caused the floods in the first instance.”
The report called for full transparency and a breakdown of the repair costs to assure taxpayers that they are getting value for their money.
Mikey Sheehy, former mayor of Tralee, admitted that the torrential rains in June left his town in ruins.
He said, “the sheer volume of rain that fell on the ground was unbelievable.”
It lasted 45 minutes, and the flooding waters subsided in about the same amount of time.
The problem was simply that the gutters, catch basins, and drains could not handle all of the water. The flat-roofed buildings were the hardest hit.
