One person was injured and a dog killed in an explosion at a fourplex near Virginia Avenue on South Lincoln Street.
Denver Fire Department suspects a gas explosion was responsible for the blast which severely damaged an apartment fourplex on Thursday night.
“The person who was injured received minor injuries and was transported to hospital,” said Capt. JD Chism.
In the explosion, one dog died. One dog was saved.
Just after 6 pm, in the West Washington Park area near Baker, an explosion took place at a building with four units on South Lincoln Street, near the intersection of Virginia Avenue.
Firefighters suspect that the natural gas explosion is to blame.
Chism reports that Xcel shut down gas and electricity to the building and its surrounding properties. Firefighters checked for any gas leaks or hazards in nearby buildings.
In a press release to 9NEWS Xcel stated, “Our hearts are with the people affected by this fire.” The local fire department is working with us to identify the cause. The natural gas supply has been shut off. After all safety checks are completed, the service will be reinstated. “We will work closely with the authorities to investigate.”
David Wilson and Lynn DeJohn went out for dinner immediately after the explosion at Blue Bonnet, Broadway.
Wilson reported: “We felt the vibration in our chests, we looked out the window to see a large cloud of dust.”
All turned to face each other. All became quiet. Over the buildings, you could see debris. “Then came the ambulances, one by one.” DeJohn stated.
Tiffany DeMestico and Connor DeMestico are both in the same vicinity.
The whole street was shaken. Tiffany stated, “We were very worried. We didn’t even know what it was.”
The building’s door was located on the opposite side of the road. “There was rubble all over,” Connor said.
Tiffany said, “It’s pretty frightening.” I think people down a few blocks felt it too. The entire neighborhood was shaken. “We couldn’t understand what happened.”
