Birmingham City Council blamed “weather conditions” for preventing recent repairs to the property
Birmingham City Council promised that it would conduct an “emergency” inspection of a ‘unsafe family home’ where residents had spent 4 years asking for help. Residents of a Selly Oak apartment in Birmingham were left with a disrepair state due to unresolved water leaks. Damp was also seen seeping through the electrical wiring.
The family was worried about their safety after the power went out twice. They believed that there might have been water on the wiring. One incident caused their daughter, aged 8, to be ‘frightened’ of using the bathroom because the light went out when she touched the button.
After relative Keith Sidi asked the council to repair the problem at its root, the authority announced that roof repairs would now be scheduled for today, 28 November, and the roof will be replaced by April. The authority stated that a worker had been sent to the site on “an emergency basis” in order to make sure the building was safe.
Birmingham City Council spokesperson told BirminghamLive that “we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to our tenant.” The contractors from Birmingham City Council have been to the property multiple times in order to determine the cause of the water leakage and make repairs.
The weather has hampered some recent repairs and some were not completed because of recent storms. Our emergency response team has been dispatched to the site in order to make sure that it is secure.
Roof repairs will be rescheduled for the 28th of November. The property is also being referred to our investment program for a complete roof replacement. The work on the new roof is expected to begin by the end of this financial year.
Once the roof is replaced, one of our inspectors can be sent to assess the issue.
In a previous statement, speaking on behalf of his family, Sidi said that they lived at Brushwood Road since seven years. The problems have gotten worse in the past four. “Imagine that you have been paying rent and still your family is not comfortable.
We knew the roof was leaking from the first day, and we immediately contacted the local council to let them know. They didn’t fix the roof for two years.
Someone came to the apartment and cleaned and painted it on the third anniversary. Then they said that everything would be okay. “Two, three months later the problem occurred again.”
Mr Sidi added that after asking for the help of a lawyer, workers returned and painted the walls to “make it new again”. They came in the summer when it wasn’t raining and when the rain started, they had the same issue.
He explained that the first time his family’s electricity blew out, “the power to the switch for the cooker just went off”. The emergency council workers arrived late in the night to secure the house and fixed the socket two days later.
M. Sidi, however, said that he is concerned about the fact that the cause of these issues, which, he believes, is damp in the walls, has been overlooked. If the problem is not solved, he said that he fears more issues will arise.
