After yet another damage, a charity has called for an end to the destruction of its Shaun the Sheep statues.

Martlets thinks some of the vandalism is deliberate, while others have been broken through late-night highjinks.

Over the weekend, Shauns, in Marlborough Place and Brighton, as well as St Anne’s Well Gardens, were damaged.

Sculptures by Pepperpot on Queens Park Road, and the i360 had been vandalised in the past. #

Repairing a damaged sculpture can cost as much as PS7500. This could prevent them from being auctioned at the conclusion of the trail next month.

Tanya Hunt is the director of income at Martlets. She says: “We understand that these sheep are tempting for children to jump or sit on them, but we know they’re actually works of art. They’ll be sold in an auction to raise money to keep Martlets running.

After the COVID locksdowns, we wanted people to feel connected to our work by sharing a joyful moment.

We’ve been working hard with artists and sponsors on this trail. With thousands of maps and apps being downloaded, we can tell that so many people are enjoying it.

We want to help people create memories they will cherish, but think twice before climbing on top of a statue for a picture or just to impress friends after a fun night out.

We are asking everyone to help us spread the message that our efforts will keep Shauns and Martlets safe.

Please don’t sit, climb or graffiti on the walls. Please donate instead to keep the trail open until 5 November so that everyone can enjoy it.

Every donation has an impact, regardless of its size. It directly impacts people diagnosed with terminal illnesses. Martlets will provide end-of life care with compassion and dignity to those facing their last days.

One group of trail artists has stated that “a single sheep could take over 100 hours to paint.”

We were thrilled to see the work on display in the city and hoped that residents and visitors would enjoy it.

We are happy to say that we have helped to raise much-needed funds for Martlets to continue their vital work.

We are also deeply upset and saddened by how some people have treated the work we do.

“Several sculptures were deliberately damaged. Some will require considerable expenditure and additional time in order to restore them to the point where they can be sold.”
