WASHINGTON, D.C. (TND), – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had to leave the campaign trail in order to handle two crises that have arisen in his state after the racially-motivated shooting in Jacksonville, and the landfall of Hurricane Idalia on Wednesday.
DeSantis had to transition from the campaign to the governing mode with two crises in front of him. This was a time that could be either a danger or an opportunity, depending on the way the voters and the state interprets his leadership.
DeSantis, as one of the two governors running in this race, has an opportunity to appeal to primary voters through his experience as a leader at a local level and his promise to bring what he believes are Florida’s achievements to a nationwide audience. DeSantis has said that if elected president, he’d like to continue the initiatives he started in Florida. However, the recent response to the racist and natural disasters are rare opportunities to show his real-time leadership.
His campaign has been trying to gain support for the Republican primary. Since months, he has consistently been the top challenger of former president Donald Trump according to opinion polls. However, he has struggled to convince voters to back him since launching his campaign.
DeSantis is facing more disadvantages than benefits right now. If the hurricane is manageable and he can get some positive images about him as a hands-on, compassionate leader, this could help him,” says Ray La Raja a professor of political science and the co-director for the UMass survey.
DeSantis, who returned to Florida in time for the storm on Wednesday, has appeared at multiple press conferences and events. He has warned people to avoid danger and discussed how his administration is prepared to deal with it after it has passed.

DeSantis told reporters during a Tuesday press conference, “You’ll do whatever you have to.” It’s not going to differ from what we did with Hurricane Ian. “I hope that the storm will not be as devastating as Hurricane Ian was. But we are going to do what is necessary because this just one thing that we have done before.”
If voters think he’s stepping away from his job, it could be an awkward moment when he returns to campaigning.
La Raja explained that it was a “difficult situation” because the people of Florida would be saying, “look, you care nothing about us. You’re just not paying attention.” The worst possible thing for the people in the state to do is have their governor running for president. It creates real pressures on how people behave.
DeSantis could be forced to decide whether or not to go on stage with Joe Biden. He has mocked him in his speeches, and he’s directly challenged him as governor by bringing state laws into play and suing over the administrations policies.
In the event of a natural disaster, presidential visits usually include a visit with the state governor as well as photos showing the two taking teh aftermath. Ramaswamy told the crowd, “Gimme an embrace just as you did for Obama and you will help me elect just like Obama.”

Independent voters want to see a Democratic President and Republican Governor working together. La Raja explained that there are primary voters, who can be radically partisan. They’re searching for the candidate who best represents their views.
