Pastor Kellie Sulley of New Life At Calvary Church told us that she received a police call at 12:47 am stating the damage to her church.

“They believed we were hit by lightning, but she told me water was pouring in our building,” Sullivan explained.

A tornado tore the roof of the 143 year old church located at the intersection of East 79 th Street and Euclid Ave. Damage occurred to an area which houses youth worship, offices and activity spaces.

On Friday, insurance adjusters visited the local church.

Reginald Woods, a long-time member of the church, said: “It’s sad.” We just finished some church repairs and this happens.

Cleveland Historic Landmark, the Romanesque Stone Church. Pastor Sullivan stated that they are currently working to get the church listed on the National Registry. She stated that the church’s mission has always been to serve the community.

Sullivan stated, “We are committed to serving people and helping them in their greatest time of need.” We make sure that people are fed. “We make sure that people are provided with clothing and resources.”

It was the first church in the region to offer integrated services. Sullivan says the church has been through many difficult times, and that storm damage will not derail their progress.

Woods said, “God’s in charge.” Woods stated that God is in control.

“We will continue to serve God,” said Sullivan. “We’re keeping our faith.”

The Dunham Tavern Museum, another Cleveland Historic Landmark, was also being cleaned up by teams.

Brenda Ellner is a former president of Dunham Tavern. She said, “We’re the oldest building in Cleveland still standing on the same grounds.”

The property was damaged by several large trees that fell, destroying a porch as well as the roof and the facade.

“We feel terrible. “This is a very special place,” said Dr. Ellner. People have called it the jewel in the middle of Cleveland.

It was one stop people would make while travelling west in horse-drawn buggies during the pioneering days.

Ellner explained that the stagecoach driver went upstairs to sleep after stopping at this tavern. The people would eat, then another driver would descend and take them to Buffalo Road.

Ellner confirmed that the benefit at the museum planned for this weekend will still take place.

Pastor Sullivan announced that the Sunday service at New Life at Calvary Church would be held on the church parking lot. A tree leans on the sanctuary, and it needs to be taken down before regular services can resume.

Dr. Sullivan stated, “We don’t want to give up yet on our dream of New Life Calvary. We believe God will do great things through it.”
