Officials claim that 129 Muslims have been arrested following a mob’s anger over an alleged Quran-desecration attack on a dozen Christian churches in Janawala. Two Christian men have also been arrested for defacing Islam’s holy book.
The mob carried out one of these alleged desecrations in Jaranwala on Wednesday, in one of most devastating attacks against Christians in the nation.
Bilal Mehmood is the police chief of the city. He said that Raja Amir, along with a friend, were arrested after tearing out pages from Qurans and making insulting comments on some pages.
Christian residents returned slowly to their homes to witness the devastation. Rizwan Khan, regional police chief in the region, said that 129 suspects had been detained as rioters.
Shazia amjad, as she wept in front of her home that was on fire, said: “We heard a mob coming, burning houses and attacking churches.
The mob destroyed furniture and household goods while she was with her family. Some of her belongings were also stolen.
Other Christians described similar experiences and expressed their bewilderment.
After burning down his house, which is one of many buildings on his street, he said that rioters removed furniture and other items from his household.
Why did they treat us like that? “We had done nothing wrong,” asked the man.
Khalid Mukhtar is a priest in Jaranwala. He believes that most of the 17 churches there were destroyed.
The storm damaged churches and homes. Those who have suffered will receive compensation within one week.
Anwaarul-ul-Haq Kakar, caretaker prime minister, ordered the police to arrest those responsible for violence.
According to the chief of regional police, the mob attacked churches and Christian homes immediately. The offices of the city administrator were also attacked, however, police responded by firing into the sky and using batons, with help from Muslim elders.
In videos and pictures on social media angry people have thrown bricks at a church and lit it ablaze. In another video, attackers set fire to four other churches by throwing furniture and setting them alight.

Rights groups claim that religious minorities were intimidated by blasphemy accusations and scores had been settled.
