Norwegians prepare for further flooding in the mountains southeast as swollen river carry huge amounts of water down south following heavy rains.

Rescuers in southeastern Norway evacuated areas that were flooded on Thursday as rivers, swollen from days of rain and heavy snowfall, carried large quantities of water across the mountains.

People near the waterways had to be moved higher during Hurricane Sandy. They were forced to move their vehicles and their possessions, as well. Helicopters helped in remote regions, and volunteers in Honefossen.

Begna River, which flows through town, overflowed Thursday and the municipal announced an evacuation. Red Cross, civil defense and the Red Cross helped transport 200 people to an nearby hotel by bus.

Norwegian broadcaster NRK said at least 4,000 people had been evacuated, but the authorities have not provided a national count.

The nine-day festival includes dance performances, art exhibits, concerts and other activities in the picturesque valley of Lillehammer which was home to the Winter Olympics 1994.

Starting Monday, Storm Hans caused damage and disruption in Norway, Denmark Sweden, Finland Lithuania Estonia and Latvia. Ferries were cancelled, flights delayed, streets and roads were inundated, and some people were hurt by branches that fell. Southern Norway suffered the most.

Skulstad said that the situation was “grave and continuously evolving.”

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate increased its warning for floods and landslides from orange to a red color on Thursday.

Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon and his wife Queen Sonja are scheduled to visit the areas affected on Friday.

Parts of Goteborg’s harbor, Sweden’s second largest city, remain flooded. As a result, roads and rail lines were shut in the region.
